“Mother Knows Best.”
Is it true that life doesn’t comes with a manual, it comes with a mother? Ms. Jen Hender Gempis, from Limay, Bataan and a full-time mom, is living to prove this statement.
There is a beautiful reason why moms seemed to know what’s best for their child, it’s because of their mothering instinct. Their child is like a puzzle piece that makes their heart as a whole. And like other people, Ms. Gempis once got her heart shattered, when her 19 years- old daughter was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, lupus. It was a devastating moment for a mother, but it doesn’t stopped Ms. Gempis, instead, she continuously looked for solutions, aside from regular check-up with her daughter’s doctor.
Ms. Gempis harvesting HEARTY® F1 Tuscan Kale Broad Leaf from Haverson Enterprises
Until her endless searching led to this super food called “Kale (Brassica oleraceae)”.
Kale is jam-packed with vitamins like vitamins A, C, K, B6 and minerals such as manganese, potassium, calcium, copper and magnesium, which are essential for bone health, heart health, brain development, eye health and chronic disease prevention. And this leave Ms. Gempis of not having a second thought growing her own kale on her backyard.
And how ironic it is, that the shattered heart of Ms. Gempis will be mend by another heart? It is the time when she met HEARTY® F1, the Tuscan Kale Broad Leaf variety from HAVERSON ENTERPRISES.
HEARTY® F1:
- Good uniformity
- High Yielding
- Broad, dark-green leaves
- Adaptable to lowland or highland, and easy to grow!
Ms. Gempis happily shared her success not just in growing HEARTY® F1, but also the great news of her daughter’s laboratory result getting better. “Malaking tulong po ‘yung kale sa anak ko, ‘yung kale ini-smoothie ko po sa kanya. Maganda po ang result ng laboratories niya”. Even her daughter’s doctor was amazed by the results and fascinated that she was able to cultivate kale on her backyard, specifically in plastic bottles only. Maybe that’s just how life actually works, no manuals, just mother wanting the best for her child.
HEARTY® F1 kale can be transplanted from a seedling or directly seeded into the ground/pots. Seeds germinate in 4-7 days in the nursery or ground. If to be grown in pots, used 10-12 inches diameter pot and plant 1 seedling per pot to provide enough space for growth. While in the field, seedlings should be spaced 12-18 inches apart and 1.5- 2 feet apart between rows.
To provide enough nutrition, add organic fertilizer (example: animal manure) in the soil prior to sowing and transplanting. 1 week after sowing, apply 10g of complete fertilizer per seedlings such as 14-14-14. At 2nd and 3rd week after sowing, apply high Nitrogen fertilizer such as 46-0-0 (Urea) + 14-14-14 complete fertilizer.
During 4th, 5th and 6th week after sowing, introduce 10g of high Phosphorus fertilizer such as 16-20-0 or 18-46-0, + 10g complete fertilizer per plant. Always provide enough water in your plant. Excessive watering or stagnant soil may result to poor seed germination, nutrient deficient seedlings and disease infection. It’s a best practice to always monitor for insect pest and diseases. You can use either organic or synthetic pesticides either for personal consumption commercial production. Mulching and weeding around the plant will reduce weed competition and conserve soil moisture.
You can start harvesting leaves or entire plant at 55 to 65 days after sowing. HEARTY® F1 Tuscan Kale Broad Leaf is perfect to be used as chips, for salads and especially juice.
