Yellow mealworm is safe for human consumption

Yellow mealworm, an insect species that is a larval stage of a mealworm or darkling beetle (Tenebrio molitor), was found safe for human consumption as declared by the EU Food Safety Agency.

These are often used as an alternative source of low-carbon protein. Its main components include protein, fibre, and fat, providing a potential solution to the increasing food demand globally. However, consuming them may not be advisable for everyone as prawn and dust mites allergy sufferers are likely to get allergic reactions to yellow mealworms when eaten.
