Mindoro Strait Local Tuna Management Plan to protect and promote natural resources and fisherfolk approved

The Mindoro Strait Local Tuna Management Plan was endorsed by the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC) during the Farmer and Fisherfolk Forum held in Occidental Mindoro. The endorsement symbolizes an achievement for the promotion of sustainable tuna in Mindoro.

Since 2016, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines has been working to further improve the National Tuna Management Plan. The conservation organization is working together with other concerned departments and government units such as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Provincial Government, and the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils (FARMCs) of Mindoro.

The Integrated Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (IFARMC) endorsed the plan to Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona, the chairperson of NFARMC, who will decide if the Mindoro Strait Local Tuna Management Plan will be added to the National Tuna Management Plan.

Specified in the management plan are preservation measures and strategies to secure and advance the status of the municipal fishermen, which is also a point of concern for BFAR.

The plan was approved by the NFARMC. The Mindoro Strait IFARMC, together with its partner government units and agencies, will now proceed with the execution of the plan with the hopes of continuously executing it this year onwards.
