Bees are natural pollinators that are integral to plant growth. These insects also provide honey from the pollen they gather and store within their hives. Needless to say, there are a lot of benefits that humankind can get from bees.
For the people of Riau, an Indonesian province where honey production is on the rise, bees are also the reason for 7the transformation of their livelihoods.
Aside from paying attention and cultivating their means of livelihood, the Indonesian local government is intensifying its efforts to conserve peatland areas, or an area with a naturally accumulated organic material on its surface.
This project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry along with the Center for International Forestry Research.
Researchers are currently exploring new livelihood options which have the capacity to support local villages in the area.
Any information gathered will be funneled into the ministry’s project known as the the Sustainable Management of Peatland Ecosystem in Indonesia.
